In a concerning development, over 200 residents of The Metrozone apartments in Anna Nagar, Chennai, have fallen ill over the past week due to suspected water contamination. The affected individuals, including children, reported symptoms such as diarrhoea, nausea, and vomiting, raising alarm about the quality of water in the apartment complex.

Water Contamination at Metrozone Apartments in Chennai | An Overview

The contamination was traced to a 3-lakh litre sump that stores water from the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) and private suppliers. Upon inspection by CMWSSB, Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), and health officials, blackish sludge and seepage were found in the sump, leading to a possible source of the contamination.

The Metrozone apartments, housing around 1,200 families across 19 blocks, primarily rely on this water for cooking and drinking. Despite the use of Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems to purify the water, the contamination appears to have bypassed the filters, resulting in widespread illness.

A resident expressed concern over the situation, stating that isolated cases had been appearing over the past 15 days, but the numbers surged to over 200 recently. Health camps have been set up within the complex to monitor and treat the affected residents.

Further investigation revealed that blackish water had been entering the sump from an unknown source. Residents have been advised to clean and disinfect the sump, tanks, and RO systems immediately. The apartment’s residents association is required to submit proof of disinfection to ensure the safety of the water supply moving forward.

Additionally, food safety officials are collecting samples from drinking water cans provided by vendors to a section of the residents to rule out further sources of contamination. CMWSSB’s supply has been reported as clean, leading officials to focus on the apartment's internal water storage system.
